The history of the plastic coffin is closely linked to the funeral industry in Heidelberg.

Its roots go back to 1949:
On 1 May 1949, Hans Feuerstein, grandfather of the current managing director, founded the first private funeral home in Heidelberg. This marked the beginning of a family tradition in the funeral industry that has continued across three generations, and whose experience later contributed to the development of the foil coffin.

From the idea to the foil coffin

In 1997, the company VKF Foliensarg | BioSeal UG was founded. In the early stages, the metal composite film – originally developed for space research – was imported from the USA and initially tested in the company’s own four funeral homes. Practical experience quickly showed that this lightweight yet impermeable solution offered a wide range of applications within the funeral industry.

Over the years, the process was further developed and production was relocated to Germany. Today, the company distributes the foil coffin from its base in Heidelberg throughout Europe to funeral directors, repatriation services, emergency services, and medical and forensic institutions.

Experience meets innovation

Behind the company is Verena Kurz-Feuerstein, a qualified funeral director, master funeral director and thanatopractitioner. For many years, she also worked as an expert in the funeral industry at the Mannheim Chamber of Crafts. Her many years of experience in day-to-day funeral practice were a key starting point for developing an alternative to the traditional zinc coffin.

The foil coffin provided a versatile solution for a range of requirements within the funeral industry. Whether for transfers, storage or special operational situations, the foil coffin offers a practical and flexible alternative. What began as a practical idea within the funeral industry has now grown into a specialist company with satisfied customers in Germany and across Europe.
